Another New Year, Another New Adventure

2013 was a great year we had our third child, I went on a backpack hunt for turkey and trout, chased after Kentucky Elk, hunted two great properties in Maryland, went to Outdoor Retailer Summer Market and attended the North American International Auto Show! It was a great year but 2014 is already starting with a bang! I just accepted a job in St. Paul, Minnesota so within the next few weeks I’ll be packing my family up and heading 1,200 miles west.

With such a big move comes a lot of stress but also a lot of excitement. We are very excited about the move and can’t wait to get there and while the winters can be brutal the outdoor activities are off the charts. All my son talks about it is going ice fishing. He loves fishing the ponds and lakes here, unfortunately I think he might be a little less excited about ice fishing when he realizes the conditions, but that remains to be seen. This leads me to a whole new opportunity for hunting. I’ve lost access to almost all my Virginia properties and can’t wait to try my hand at chasing big Minnesota whitetails. The move also puts me within much more reasonable driving distance of Colorado making an elk hunt that much more practical.

If I’m quiet for the next few weeks it just means I’m crazy busy trying to get out west and settle in. Once out there I’m sure I’ll have loads of new content for the site. You can always hit me up on Twitter! Do you have any big adventures planned for 2014? Comment below if you do!

If you son wants to ice fish, definitely buy a power auger :) We’re sitting between 15 and 18 inches of ice on most lakes and I live in southern Wisconsin. You don’t want to drill through that by hand. Pulling pike and walleye through a hole is a blast, though. Just get some good wool socks & wool underlayers and you’ll be good to go. I’ve got a lot of ice fishing posts on my blog if you want to show him what it’s like. Congrats, and I hope your move goes smoothly!

Excited for you Will! Some adventures of mine for 2014.. A spring filled with Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan long beards and shed hunting. Quickly followed by the NFL draft and OTA’s. Then, a move to a city I won’t know until May. My fingers are crossed for a city that I can make it to the woods on my days off! As I’ve mentioned to you before, anytime you’d like to experience the best of Wisconsin, it’s only a 3 hour drive and I’d love to take you and the kids out whenever I’m back that way. Enjoy the journey and safe travels! You might as well just start saying, “On Wisconsin” now because no one likes those silly gophers up there!

    • TheWilltoHunt

You’re going to have a busy spring and it sounds like a blast! I’ll be following along in the Draft you’re gonna do great. I might have to take you up on some WI hunting come fall!

  • Frenzyoutdoors

My parents used to live there, all they talked about was how cold it got in the winter. I wish you the best, I know you will do well wherever you are and whatever you do.

      Thanks Neil!

  • Kristin

Good luck on your new adventures! I hope you’ll find great hunting territory in MN!
